When an American pilot named Steve Trevor crashes on their island, Diana nurses him back to health and falls in love with him. The goddesses Athena and Aphrodite then instruct Hippolyta to send Steve back to America with an Amazon champion to aid the Allies in World War II, believing this will promote world peace and women’s rights. After winning a series of trials and contests, Diana becomes the Amazon champion, taking on the moniker ‘Wonder Woman,’ and accompanies Steve to battle the Axis powers.
In the subsequent early issues of Sensation Comics, Diana assumes the identity of an army nurse named Diana Prince to remain close to Steve Trevor without revealing her true identity as Wonder Woman. She befriends Etta Candy and her college friends, who assist her in her adventures.
Wonder Woman #1 expands on Diana’s origin, revealing that the Amazons were created by the goddess Aphrodite to challenge warmongering mortal men. Hippolyta sculpts Diana from clay with the assistance of Athena and Aphrodite. Diana’s mission in the “Man’s World” is to defeat the Nazis, who are under the influence of Mars, the god of war.
